OCTOBER EDUCATION PROGRAM
The
October
Education Program will be held Monday, October 25/10 at the Alberta
School for
the Deaf at 6240-113 Street, Edmonton.
Our speaker for the evening will be Marlena Wyman from the
Provincial
Archives.
A couple
of months
ago, the CASE historical records were submitted to the Provincial
Archives. Marlena will explain the
process that they are undertaking for the review of our records and
what
happens to this information. She
will also explain the other services, lectures and workshops that are
offered
by the Archives. If you have an
interest in Alberta history or genealogy this session is a must!
STRENGTHEN YOUR MIND AS WELL AS YOUR BODY
The September Self Help meeting featured Donna Mae Winquist from the Minerva Senior Studies Institute at Grant MacEwan University. Donna reviewed the learning opportunities that they are offering in the fall of 2010. Detailed program information is available at their website minerva@macewan.ca and their courses are open to all those interested. CASE members are encouraged to develop their minds as well as their bodies and the Minerva Institute offers many interesting opportunities to do that through the year.
In fall of 2010, the Minerva Institute is offering courses in art, computers, health/wellness, history, languages, math, music and writing. They also offer presentations on Latin, spirituality, travel and geology. They have a walkabout series to explore facilities in our community that will include touring Little Italy, the waste management centre, the Mac Taggart Art Collection and viewing Xmas at the Hotel Macdonald.
THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING... (TO BE
CONTINUED...)
It should no longer be news to any member of CASE that we have been asked to vacate the Alberta School For the Deaf by January 1, 2011. This information was received late in September and a volunteer Relocation Committee was formed immediately. The Committee has been looking at a number of options for the relocation of CASE and its exercise program. To help the committee a survey of member needs was undertaken and that has shown that we want the following:
á
We need two days of exercise per week, all
year
long. Which two days is somewhat
flexible so long as one of the days is not Friday.
The time slot being sought is 1.5 to 2.0 hours during the
period after 3:00 PM. The program
should be completed on or before 7:00 PM.
á We need an area that will permit floor exercises and space for walking or jogging is desirable. Having access to exercise equipment such as free weights and exercise balls is desired. This equipment might belong to the facility if storage is not available for CASE's own exercise equipment. We would like to have access to a fitness centre that has available machines such as exercise bikes, treadmills and elliptical trainers. It is very unlikely that if we move from the ASD that we will find a location that will be able to house our fitness machines. Having access to a volleyball court associated with the exercise area is preferred.
á The survey indicated that the facility should be located in one of the wards 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12. Free parking should be available.
á
The survey indicated that fees up to $250
might be
acceptable if the right facilities and activities are available. Members want to discuss the changes
with the Executive prior to final decisions being taken.
The shortness of time to search for a new location for our program is a problem since most facilities plan their space allocations 3 months to a year in advance. However, we are looking at a number of options for a location and the services that we may be able to provide to exercise members.
One option is to move the exercise program into the Southeast Edmonton Seniors Centre (SEESA) at least until June. This facility appears to be available and is at a reasonable cost. However, SEESA's gymnasium and other facilities will presents real limits to our exercise program. There are no exercise machines and no space to locate our equipment there. It appears that volleyball may be possible but there is no changing area or showers available. We might choose to move into SEESA as an interim location until more suitable facilities can be located and booked.
Two other options under active consideration include relocation to the Kinsmen Sports Centre or to the Central Lions Seniors Recreation facility. Both have excellent facilities for our programs but the availability of time suitable spaces and times in these facilities is still under discussion.
The Kinsmen Sport Centre is where we have run our exercise program for a number of years during the summer months. The latest discussions suggest that some times may be available at that facility and, if so, it could provide for floor exercise programs, volleyball and the use of available fitness equipment. Access may be of concern to some members but it is on the south side and has a wide variety of programs that are offered.
The Central Lions Seniors Facility also might provide a variety of options for the exercise programs. A fitness studio could provide an exercise floor and equipment like weights and balls. The main gymnasium has provision for sports like volleyball and badminton. The primary difficulty with this facility may be the location south of the Municipal Airport which could increase the travel times of many members by 10 to 20 minutes.
The committee has examined a number of other options. The option of renting space in a school gymnasium will be difficult, and probably is not the best long term solution for CASE's needs.
Under the Joint Use Agreements, the allocations of the gymnasiums were done last spring and summer. Finding a current vacancy in a school with a large enough gymnasium for our group, that is in our desired areas of the City, may well be impossible in the short term. A more significant problem may be that the allocation of space in the schools is done each year and the allocation priorities are first to serve community youth programs. As a result we could be faced with moving each year,or even losing a school allocation altogether. The Committee decided not to pursue this approach to finding space.
It was rumored that there might be a fitness centre available in the Manzankowski Heart Institute. While this seemed potentially an ideal solution (at least in the short term) the committee decided not to pursue it further because of the cost of parking at the University and the Hospital. The use of the LRT could also offer alternative access but it is not without cost and would considerably extend travel times for many members in comparison to the other options. There may be similar issues associated with locating in other public facilities that are not focused on recreation services.
It may be that more locational opportunities are available if we are willing to reconsider some of our programs. For example the Millwoods Recreation Centre has a pool and an excellent fitness facility but volleyball space is not available 'in house' Other options like this could be explored over time.
By the end of October, the committee
is hoping
to put some clear definition around what we are going to do in January. We are proposing a General meeting of
the CASE Membership be held immediately after the Tuesday November 2,
2010
Exercise Class.
If there is any change in the date time
or place
for this meeting, members will be notified by e-mail.
At that meeting we hope to present a final recommendation
for what to do to finish out the 2010-2011 year and we may be able to
recommend
a long term plan as well. We will
seek member input. If final
proposals have not been received from the facilities that we are
pursuing, it
is possible that an additional general meeting may be needed later in
November
HEARTS AND FLOWERS
Barry Latham has undergone surgery to rebuild his knee. He is well under recovery and was reported to be playing golf recently... We are looking forward to having him back with us at exercises soon, no matter where we end up! If you are aware of any member who has taken ill, has been confined to their home, or has been hospitalized, please e-mail this information info@edmontoncase.org or call at Donna Haugh at 780-463-0644.
